At this time of the year, people from all over the world flock to Vancouver Island, BC to witness up close and personal the sheer beauty and majestic view of different species of whales. When visiting the area, Victoria and Nanaimo are among the ideal jump off point to getting in and around the whale watching locations.

If you want to make the best out of your travel, here is a complete guide on the different popular hotspots along with key information on whale watching activities.

Victoria & Gulf Islands Whale Watching

Among the different hotspots, this is the most famous location to go whale watching, especially the area around Juan de Fuca Strait and Haro Strait on the southern end of Vancouver Island. Tours and trips are just an easy excursion booking out of Victoria.

Whale Sightings. There are different types of whale species that frequent in these waters including gray whales, orcas (or killer whales), humpback whales and minke whales. Dall’s porpoises, California sea lions, Stellar’s sea lions, Pacific white-sided dolphins, elephant seals and harbour seals are also among the other animal species you will see. In addition, you can also discover hundreds of marine bird species around this area.

Best time to go. Starting from the end of April up to the end of October will be the peak viewing season. However, you can always visit and join a tour anytime the whole year round since there will always be a lot to view.

Northern Islands & Johnstone Straits Whale Watching

There are several prime whale-watching locations that exist at the northern tip of Vancouver Island. There are also a lot of small communities operating in whale-watching tours including the communities of Port Hardy, Alert Bay, Port McNeill, Sointula and Telegraph Cove.

Whale Sightings. Here you will discover transient orcas, entertaining humpback whales and migrating gray whales. A lot of these whale classes summer in the Strait. You will also be able to find Dall’s porpoises, Pacific white-sided dolphins, harbour seals and other types of seals. The Island also offers an important area for some of the greatest salmon fishing.

Best time to go. There are 19 pods enclosing more than 170 orcas that travel in the Strait. Thus, the best time to visit the area is between the months of April and October. At this time of the year, if you visit by the end of the peak view season, you might still view a number of whales and other animal species but your comfort might be compromised because the weather is quite temperamental.

Tofino, Pacific Rim & Ucluelet Whale Watching

This famous whale-watching area is located in the west coast and is popular for its migrating gray whales for each month of March and April. The location is wild and rugged, enclosing a lot of sounds filled with coves, bays, channels and inlets.

Whale Sightings. Although the most widely known species of whale you can see is the gray whale, occasionally you will also see humpback whales. Also, don’t miss the California sea lions, Pacific white-sided dolphins, sea otters and many bird species.

Best time to go. The most appropriate time to view the gray whale is during their yearly migration between the months of March and April. All throughout summer however, whale-watching happens on the Pacific Rim. There are about 40 to 50 gray whales do a stopover to spend the summer nourishing off this coast.

Nanaimo is one of those charming places you think you have already explored every nook and cranny and had all figured out – only to find out more interesting facets and attractions awaiting to be discovered. Being a local and a self-imposed tourist ambassador of Vancouver Island, BC, I have been and seen every attraction Nanaimo has to offer, or so I thought.

A Pleasant Surprise

Then I came across with some pretty great reviews on Newcastle Island, which  piqued my curiosity. Reading comments such as “It’s the loveliest part of Nanaimo”, “Jewel of an Island” and “Amazing views!”, I thought this is something I have to personally see and experience for myself.

And so I scheduled a trip to Newcastle Island with a family member,  and much to our delight, it certainly is a place of natural rugged beauty.  The island is breathtaking in its stark simplicity and it’s one of those places that seem to beckon to world-weary souls.

An Accessible Sweet Escape

Newcastle Island is situated in Nanaimo Harbour, which is just mere minutes away from downtown Nanaimo, BC. You can access the island via a private boat or by Nanaimo Harbour Ferry, which leaves from Maffeo Sutton Park.  the view from afar, one can easily sense its colorful history and rich character that will never fair to stir the interest of both locals and tourists.

There are a number of activities you can do on Newcastle Island, such as, hiking, biking, tent camping, swimming, picnicking, and kayaking. One of the highlights of the island is the 1930’s era pavilion, which showcases historical displays along with a concession stand and camp store. However, you have to note that there are no motorized vehicles on this island except for its grounds keeper.

Newcastle Island Totem Pole

Spend a Day of Leisure

You can enjoy a few hours of strolling, swimming or you can camp overnight.  I particularly like the lack of posh amenities and facilities, which in a way force you to go back to the basics and spend more time interacting with your family and friends instead of being overly distracted with the fancy trappings that usually come with most vacation hotspots.

You can enjoy the view from Newcastle Island at sunset, where it sets a stage for a magnificent view of  Nanaimo's boat marina and it's downtown. There are many small bays that present perfect coves for swimming and fun activities to keep kids preoccupied and happy all day long.

Without a doubt, Newcastle Island is a great refuge for people who simply want to get away from the usual hustle and bustle of the city. The great news is, you don’t need to travel far and wide to find this truly wonderful oasis.

When planning a trip to a certain destination, we all look up for information on two important things: the popular tourist attractions and favorite food destinations. In Nanaimo, there are a number of great places to eat, but when you are on a limited visit, you naturally want to cut down the chase and pick the best restaurant in town.

A Favorite Local Hangout

Well, its best to allow the locals to guide you and lead you straight to what is fondly dubbed as the “Jewel in the crown” of Nanaimo’s Longwood Station. Conveniently nestled against a magnificent wilderness of the west coast, Longwood Brew Pub is a favorite hangout of both locals and traveling visitors. In fact, people from neighboring towns visit the area just to eat and drink here.

Known as the very first Brew Pub in the central Vancouver Island, Longwood Brew Pub has consistently won the Best Pub and Best Sunday Brunch in Nanaimo for 5 consecutive years, from 2006 to 2010. That definitely says a lot about the place.

It’s all About the Brew

One of the main attractions of this establishment is its own brew. In fact, when you visit the place, the Primary Brew House is actually just located behind its storefront glass. As you enter Longwood Brew Pub, you will be greeted by a flurry of activity since this place is practically where locals love to hang out and spend a few hours of talk over good food and good beer.

If you happen to visit on a Saturday, they conduct a day tour every 3PM, just make sure you make reservations ahead of time. A popular local attraction, join the rest of the crowd on a brewery tour and tasting session. Ladell Brewing Consultants Ltd. designed this facility, which features 25-ton silo where the Maris Otter two row brewing barley is stored. Their barley is actually imported from Warminster, England and is shipped regularly in 17-ton containers. The tour will take you through the production process and at the end, you get to sample their famous beer that seems to be a hit among locals.

Good Food, Good Times on the Menu

Of course, a good mug of cold beer is best enjoyed along with good food. They have a dining room, which gives you a stunning view of the mountain range of Vancouver Island. Dinner here is definitely a perfect ending to a busy day. Aside from beer, Longwood Brew Pub has also been recognized for its culinary excellence.

Using only the best and the freshest local produce, cooks here have been known to prepare food with passion and diners eat with exceptional gusto. Make sure you order their famous Triple A Beef dishes. All ingredients in their kitchen are 97% made from scratch and they make everything in house. Sample a few of their dishes and allow the taste to tell you why they remain to be a famous local favorite all throughout the years.

View eagles, hawks, owls and black bears at the North Island Wildlife Recovery Center near Nanaimo, BC on Vancouver Island. The centre is focused on reahbilitation so you can expect to see the birds and bears in various stages of mending.

Raptors - Eagles and Hawks

Raptor presentations take place during the summer months and there is a large flight cage for eagles. While I have seen eagles (a couple of times this year, one landed on a tree perch near my front door) and hawks (there is a family of 5 near my home) in flight, seeing them up close is quite amazing. My apprecition for these magnificent birds was greatly increased after the visit.

The Museum of Nature

After we paid our admission which was quite reasonable, we entered the Museum of Nature which was beautiflly built. The displays with stuffed birds of all sizes and types were fascinating. A great place for the whole family to get acquainted with nature up close and personal. There is also a cougar cave, interesting landscaping and a waterfall.

Wildlife Education

The mission of the Centre is education and they do a great job. Their website has lots of wonderful info. They offer In-school and off-site wildlife educational programs as well as guided tours of the facility. This is their formula for feeding hummingbirds: 3 parts water, 1 part sugar and a pinch of raspberry Jell-O.
The Centre engages with the community with Brant Festival Eagle Release, Wildlife Family Days, fundraisers and events. Check their website for upcoming events.

One of the best ways to enjoy Nanaimo is also one of the easiest, least expensive and healthiest: take a hike.  The town is located on Vancouver Island between Victoria in the south (110 km – 68 miles) and west of Vancouver on the mainland. It affords beautiful vistas and offers paths to suit those who want to break a sweat as well those who prefer a gentle stroll.

An Earthquake Fissure And Petroglyphs

It’s known as “The Abyss” among locals, and while you wouldn’t want to fall into it, the earthquake fissure is fascinating evidence of the earth’s power to reshape itself.  This neat slice into the ground seldom is a meter wide; mostly so narrow you can step across it.

Nearby petroglyphs (drawings or carvings, usually on the surface of rock or caves) probably predate the fissure and offer another source of awe.  You’ll find both on Extension Ridge, between the communities of Harewood and Extension, in south Nanaimo.

My father considered a walk among the mountains as the equivalent of churchgoing. ~Aldous Huxley

  Falls And Fossils

“The most dramatic waterfall around Nanaimo vancouver island is also one of its most secret ones,” according to The Nanaimo Information website.  Visitors who navigate the steep, muddy approach will be rewarded with the double treat of a stunning waterfall and a profusion of oceanic fossils, for which the falls are named.  The fossils, embedded in the sedimentary bedrock, are common talismans from the Paleozoic and Mesozoic oceans, 400 to 65 million years ago.

Here’s a perfect recipe for summer family fun: adults in ridicule-worthy costumes + handmade boats of dubious seaworthiness + goofy boat names + an acre of activities for the kiddies when they grow bored of watching adults act their shoe size.

These Folks Sure Put the “Fun” in “Fundraising”

The happy result of this concoction is the annual Silly Boat Regatta, held each summer in Nanaimo, BC on Vancovuer Island to benefit the Nanaimo Child Development Centre (NCDC).  This non-profit organization annually serves more than 1,700 children with developmental challenges and their families.  Last year, the Silly Boat Regatta raised more than $100,000 to fund the NCDC’s programs and services.

The event is held at Maffeo Sutton Park – just a few blocks from downtown Nanaimo.  It’s free to spectators and is a big shindig; last year’s event drew more than 10,000.

Recycling Gets Silly

Boat-building begins at 8:00 a.m.  Teams of at least two people have four hours to create a boat from recycled materials, without the help of a kit or prefabricated hull.  Silliness is encouraged with awards for “Super Silliest” boat, costumes and sailors.  Goofy team names help, too.

I wonder who fared better last year, Canadian Western Bank’s team, the “Floating Rate” or The Oxy Pub & Liquor Store’s gang, the “Oxy Moronz.”

At the Silly Boat Regatta Even the Losers Can Win

After inspection from the judges, the heats begin with small groups of teams rowing or sailing their crafts in Swy-A-Lana Lagoon to the buoy in Nanaimo Harbour and back to the starting point. The team who rings the bell back on shore wins the heat.  The winners compete in the timed Grand Championship Race to determine the final winner.

But even the loser can win: there is a “First to Sink” award!

Oh, to be a Kid Again

The Silly Boat Regatta has well-organized events for children, including the Coast Capital Savings “Wally’s World” for face painting, crafts and games; McDonald’s Restaurants “Sports Zone” with various sports events and Woodgrove Centre’s “Children’s Mini Regatta” with mini boat building, games & colouring.  And it’s all free.
