The salmon fishing at Port Alberni, BC on Vancouver Island is second to none and some consider it to be the Salmon Fishing Capital of the World which Campbell River may take exception to. Irrespective of who holds the title, the salmon fishing in Port Alberni is excellent.
Fishing the Alberni Inlet
The Alberni Inlet is a long, narrow inlet extending about 40 km (25 mi) from Barkley Sound on the Pacific Ocean up to Port Alberni. Seasonally there are large schools of Coho, Chinook and sockeye Salmon.
There is great saltwater fishing in Barkley Sound and the Port Alberni Inlet. Annually the salmon take their spawning journey from the Pacific Ocean up the Alberni Inlet into the Stamp – Somass Rivers to spawn.
River Fishing on Stamp, Sproat or Somass
These three Rivers, Stamp, Sproat and Somass, flow from two large lakes north-west of Alberni, Great Central and Sproat Lakes, and empty into the ocean at the harbour at Port Alberni.
The smaller sized Stamp and Sproat Rivers join to form the larger Somass Riverat the western border of Port Alberni. You can fish steelhead, coho and chinook salmon almost all year round on these rivers.
The Robertson Creek Fish Hatchery is on the Stamp River.
