Victoria is a historic city and what better way to explore its heritage than with a visit to a museum? The Royal BC Museum is full of interesting displays than span a variety of topics and right now is no exception with two exciting exhibitions that explore First Nations language and the museum’s collection of fish. Book your stay with us here at BEST WESTERN Vancouver Island during your visit to Victoria for comfortable, convenient, and affordable accommodations.

Our Living Languages

This exhibition, which won the 27th Annual AAM Excellence in Exhibition Competition, celebrates the diversity of First Nations languages in British Columbia. The province is known as one of the world's most linguistically diverse regions, with 34 First Nations languages spoken here.

Through original artwork, video, audio, and interactive stations, visitors will learn about the history of First Nations language, their complexity, and how First Nations communities are working to help their tongues survive. Venture through a “language forest” and be greeted by one of the First Nations languages. Then, enter a woven cocoon and listen to lullabies before viewing three different works of contemporary First Nations artwork, each of which interpret language in a different way. Our Living Languages is on at the RBM until next summer.

Finding Fishes: Collection, Research and Publication

Located in the Pocket Gallery — an intimate display space which showcases the museum’s behind-the-scenes work — this exhibition runs until April 27. Finding Fishes: Collection, Research and Publication shares the passion and discipline involved the study of fish, particularly through the lens of Dr. Gavin Hanke, the RBM’s Curator of Vertebrate Zoology.

The exhibit begins with a question: why do museums collect dead animals?  It then gives an overview of the fish in the RBM's collection, explaining why they were collected, how they were preserved, and what their scientific value is. A must for any marine science enthusiasts!
