It’s that time of year again – the days are getting longer, the sun a little warmer, and people and wildlife alike begin to stir from the slumber of winter.  Perhaps one of the most exciting events in early spring is the dramatic return of the Pacific Grey Whales during their annual migration from southern waters.

Every spring approximately 20,000 grey whales make the voyage from the warm waters of Mexico to the Bering Sea, passing the Pacific Rim National Park along the way.  Visitors can also keep an eye out for resident whales including the Orca and Humpback as well!

To celebrate this breathtaking migration, the Pacific Rim Whale Festival is a series of events focusing on education about marine ecosystems through various events.  The events range from educational seminars and discussions to culinary events like the Chowder Chowdown, public art events such as the West Coast Photo Showdown and Pacific Coastal Mermaids, and ticketed events for live music and performances including this years new event – the Electric Gumboot Ball.  There's even events for those with a bit of spring fever to get out surfing, paddleboarding, and more!

“It is amazing to watch the communities together to host over 10,000 visitors the week of. The festival's mission to inspire, educate and entertain through the celebration of coastal traditions, our spectacular environment and the spring return of the Grey Whale is certainly evident in this year's event line-up!” says festival coordinator Allie Bonner, “With over 60 events spread over 9 days, there are activities for everyone!”
